This new build plot on the outskirts of Bradford-on-Tone near Wellington, Somerset had planning permission for a large five bedroom two-storey rendered house with attached double garage. The adjacent plot re-submitted plans for an oak-framed property and the clients of this plot wanted to do similar.
This scheme was developed around a brief to keep the property traditional, aesthetically heavy and to be cost effective. Oak-frame was dropped because of its high cost and a more simple, traditional build of masonry and timber frame has been adopted. To finish these elements high quality materials have been used throughout with oak joinery, lime render, reclaimed brickwork and green oak feather-edge.
The project aims to cut running costs so has adopted a highly insulated envelope, ground source heat pump, log burners and solar gain from the south. Materials were sourced locally where possible and a scheme was drawn up for landscaping and the planting of trees.
