Soon after purchasing the house, the clients instructed us to design a replacement and extended orangery as well as convert and extend the outhouse into guest living accommodation so that family from Jersey can stay but retain independence.
The original buildings have distinctive stone work and attractive overhanging rafters with the All Saints Church projecting above the roofline and stunning views across the Somerset Levels towards the historic Muchelney Abbey and Burrow Hill.
Utilising the existing buildings with two small sensitive extensions, we have used a mid-grey aluminium glazing system to provide contemporary window frames within the existing stone walls. The rear wall of the outhouse is supporting 2m of ground behind and has been fully tanked and insulated. All the original floors have been lifted, insulated and underfloor heating provided throughout with additional radiators in the orangery. Two large pyramid rooflights ensure plenty of natural light extends back into the original kitchen and living rooms. New detailed stone steps provide access to the new orangery with the magnificent views beyond.
