Lantern Cottage

North Curry, Somerset

We were approached by the owners of Lantern Cottage to explore opportunities to expand the living accommodation on a very limited plot. With the need to work from home and therefore have dedicated office space an additional bedroom was required along with improved storage, utility space and renovation of an existing outbuilding into a dual storage and ancillary living space.

Due to the properties proximity to the conservation area of North Curry and the large scope of proposed works, early engagement was sought with the Local Planning Authority. We worked with the planning officer to finalise our proposals and submit formally for planning permission which was then approved.

The new first floor extension was formed over an oak frame which retained the existing parking arrangements below. A bedroom with en-suite provided office space elsewhere within the existing house. A new porch created a focal point to the front roadside elevation with a rich blue bespoke joinery door set in an oak frame. A single storey extension added to the existing kitchen opening up this space and providing utility and larder areas with access to the garden and the renovated outbuilding. The existing cottage has been rendered to cover a mix of various brick types and colours with the extensions and new boundary walls being built from a new rustic brick in a flemish bond for detail.

All the internals were renovated including bathrooms, stairs and floor finishes. The final result is a high quality bespoke renovation with character and charm.
